Two scientists have opened a doorway to a chilly paradise. It’s located 800 meters (2,600 feet) under the sea surface, and it looks strange and alien.

But the environment they’ve discovered is anything but hostile. It’s full of fascinating and lovely creatures, ice-cold but vibrantly alive and teeming with life.

The two scientists, Jessica Appelbaum and Scott Kleindel, recently had the privilege of diving into the world they opened. They’re the first people to ever reach the chilly paradise, and it’s thanks to them that this environment is being explored and studied. They were part of a team of researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) who had been tasked with finding out what was happening to the fragile seafloor ecosystem at the bottom of the icy ocean.

The team had set out with a research framework in mind, but what they uncovered completely surpassed their expectations. In the frigid depths of the sea, they discovered an ecosystem unlike any other.

The ecosystem is a product of cold water, low light, and little oxygen. But even without photosynthesis, the entire environment is full of a dizzying array of life.

Appelbaum and Kleindel were the first to experience this undersea wonderland in person. As they descended deeper and deeper into the depths of the ocean, they found more and more creatures, many of which had never been observed before. They saw tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans, giant sea anemones, and colorful octopi, some of which were as long as their arms. They also discovered strange and gorgeous fish which had never been seen by human eyes.

It was an awe-inspiring experience for Appelbaum and Kleindel and their fellow scientists, and their findings have proven invaluable to our understanding of life in the ocean. Through their brave exploration of the unexplored depths, they’ve opened a door to a part of our planet that we never knew existed.
