DavidFosterWallace演讲稿
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen and welcome to our event tonight featuring David Foster Wallace.
My name is Jon and I’ll be introducing David and introducing the topic of tonight’s discussion.
For those of you who don’t know who David Foster Wallace is, he is an American novelist, short-story writer, essayist, professor of English, and all-round literary genius. His works are acclaimed sources of inspiration and joy to readers all over the world. His 1996 novel Infinite Jest is one of the most acclaimed novels of the generation and several of his essays have been collected in book form, most famously, A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again.
Tonight, David will be discussing the contemporary social self, and its impact on our mental and emotional well-being. In his words:
“In a world where everything is changing, the social self has become more and more influential as a source of information and connection. In a time of information overload, we often forget ourselves and start to define ourselves by what we consume and share. This can have profoundly negative effects on our ability to experience joy and passion, as well as our ability to be content with who we are as individuals.”
As someone with a brilliant mind, David charges us to think deeply, explore ourselves, and question the meaning of life’s answers so that we can live a meaningful and fulfilled life.
Without further ado, please join me in welcoming the evening’s speaker and our special guest, David Foster Wallace!
